Abstract
The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture has developed the Rangelands’ Strategy and National Plan to address the significant degradation of rangelands in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The strategy aims to rehabilitate and develop pastoral lands through concrete efforts such as issuing laws, identifying, and protecting deteriorated sites, and implementing initiatives for rehabilitation. It incorporates input from various stakeholders and international organizations like the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Aligned with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 and other national strategies, the strategy emphasizes sustainable development and management of pastoral resources while ensuring compliance with international conventions. The vision is for rangelands to be better managed to meet environmental, social, and economic challenges through integrated efforts between the ministry, beneficiaries, and related sectors.
Description
The National Rangeland Strategy is centered on the sustainable development and management of rangeland resources and has taken into consideration the country’s current and future socio-economic and environmental conditions. The strategy has been designed to be holistic, inclusive and flexible in order to better meet its objectives. It is expected that this strategy will achieve the objectives of KSA related to the diversification of the economy and investment, which is one of the most important elements of its sustainability. The vision and goals of the strategy reflect the aspirations of Saudi Vision 2030, the National Transformation Programme 2020, the MoEWA vision and the National Environment Strategy, which called for the preparation of a strategy and action plan for rangelands in the country.
