THE NATIONAL STRATEGY FOR CONSERVATION OF BIODIVERSITY IN THE KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA

Abstract

The strategy reflects Saudi Arabia's commitment to international agreements such as the Convention on Biological Diversity. It outlines 17 strategic goals, which include the conservation of ecosystems both inside and outside protected areas, the sustainable management of forests, woodlands, and rangelands, and the protection of marine and freshwater biodiversity. The strategy also addresses the regulation of genetic resources and the enforcement of national bio-safety standards. Key biodiversity threats, such as habitat destruction, overgrazing, urban expansion, pollution, and unsustainable exploitation of resources, are identified. In response, the strategy proposes detailed conservation actions, including the creation of protected areas, promotion of sustainable agricultural practices, enforcement of environmental legislation, and initiatives to raise public awareness and education. Special emphasis is placed on scientific research, cross-sectoral coordination, and community engagement to support biodiversity conservation. The strategy serves as a guide for the government, private sector, and local communities in promoting the sustainable use of natural resources while preserving Saudi Arabia’s ecological heritage for future generations.
